Diamond Delight Done!

My first self-designed modern quilt is done! I just adore this quilt!

20140531-144955.jpg
It started out as a quilt kit that was ordered through Craftsy for me as a Christmas gift from my parents.

20140531-152343.jpg
The kit came with a design that I did not care much for but the fabric I loved! It is High Street by Moda and also came with some Bella Solids in Zen Grey and Clementine. I took the same basic design idea – striped triangles – and flipped it around and played with it a while in Electric Quilt until I came up with something that I thought was extremely cool. The strings of diamonds remind me of 70s doorway curtains made of beads. (I think I may be showing my age here.) Anyway, it’s sparkling and shimmery and colorful.

20140531-145135.jpg
The big diamond breaks up those smaller strings a little but doesn’t take over the whole quilt.
I quilted an echo around the small diamonds and also in the center of those quilt lines. This look is exactly what I was going for.

20140531-145315.jpg

I continued that same quilting into the big diamond as if the regular diamonds were there. It keeps both front and back quilted symmetrically without weird lines going everywhere.

20140531-145415.jpg
I have some extra fabric so I am planning to make an accompanying pillow cover with smaller diamonds so the effect doesn’t get lost. I think the inverted diamonds, that I added to the back – using the scraps from the original triangles, look great so I will add some of those to the pillow as well.

20140531-145515.jpg
That Bella Solids Clementine binding is superb!! I wasn’t sure as I was cutting the binding strips but it really pulls all the colors together so well.

I cleaned up my sewing space and am ready for my next big project – Wavelength by Lee Heinrich at Freshly Pieced.
Here’s a sneak at the fabric selection:

Random Roundup #2

It was another random project week around here. First there were more potholders. I showed the first two off at work and now everybody wants some.

20140524-180212.jpg
Then I made two more Sew Together Bags. One of them is mine! Pattern is available by Sew Demented on Craftsy.

20140524-180442.jpg
I got to working on the big diamond in my Diamond Delight quilt and ended up finishing the top. That full reveal is saved for another day. 🙂

20140524-181237.jpg
Then there were this week’s stash additions.

20140524-181359.jpg
A little orange and green bundle from a local shop.

20140524-181701.jpg
Some ‘In My Room’ by Jenean Morrison.

20140524-181847.jpg
Some low volume and some lite aqua. That includes Geekly Chic glasses which I’ve been looking at getting so I am excited to finally have some!

20140524-182139.jpg
And some sweet cross-stitch patterns. One is a Winnie the Pooh quote by A.A. Milne that I need to start on soon. And snowmen are my favorite winter decoration – not the ones with real snow though. You just can’t take the California out of the girl. I like my winters chilly but without ice.
I’ve also got a Traveling Stash Box up for grabs here. There’s some great stuff in the box. Leave a comment here if you want a chance to be the next stop in it’s travels.

Diamond Delight

I’ve been making a little progress on my Diamond Delight quilt top. I completed the full and half diamonds that I needed for the top and started to piece the diamonds into rows.

20140412-214442.jpg
The bottom right will contain a large diamond and I had to order some more background fabric so that I can finish piecing that section. Hopefully the dye lot won’t be too different.

20140412-220244.jpg
Once that section is complete, I can marry the two sides together for a completed quilt top. I’m really excited about this one!

On the other part of my design door is the triangle quilt for the Triangle Quilt Along over at The Sassy Quilter. I’m working on piecing the rows together.

20140412-215759.jpg
The only stash added recently that I haven’t shared is this Happy Go Lucky charm pack that I won for the Virtual Quilting Bee finished quilt link party. It also came with a paper piecing pattern but I don’t know if that will be it’s final usage.

20140412-215507.jpg
The prints are all super cute and summer picnicky. It could make a super sweet baby quilt. Time will tell. And, it’s time to work on piecing some triangle rows together. Update coming soon…

Early April Work-in-Progress

Works in progress. Seems like most of my projects have this status at the moment. First up is the Triangle Quilt Along quilt. This week is when triangles become rows.

20140405-124058.jpg
I knew that if I laid these triangles on the floor, to decide on my layout and design, that I would have to redo it over and over again because the cats would invariably rearrange them with their sliding on the pretty fabric. It’s their favorite game. 🙂
I don’t have room for a full-fledged design wall in my sewing space. I looked around and saw an area that might work on a smaller scale. The closet door! Light bulb moment. I draped some batting over the top of the door like this. The unfinished top of the door keeps the batting in place.

20140405-124530.jpg

20140405-130949.jpg
The door still shuts with no issues. Ta-da!! It was so exciting. So, I put some triangles up. No pinning. So awesome! The door will fit 4 rows of 17 triangles.

20140405-124725.jpg
The QAL calls for 12 rows, therefore repeat 3 times. Finished rows I pinned on the back of the door inside the closet on the overhang of the batting. The cats aren’t even messing with it. It’s wonderful. I’m so excited to have at least a small little design wall.
So, I have a few rows done and it looks so cool. I’m incredibly happy with the color palette for this quilt.

20140405-125153.jpg
Second WIP is my Diamond Delight quilt using High Street by Moda.

20140405-125407.jpg
The triangles are all cut. I’m just working on cutting and attaching the grey background. I’ve had to tweak the pattern and am still working out some bugs but I like how it’s coming together.

20140405-125805.jpg
Third WIP is a Disappearing Nine Patch using Sunnyside by Kate Spain. The backing fabric came in and I just need to piece that together and baste and quilt and bind it. There’s a lot left to do.

20140405-130137.jpg
The only new stash I have this week came from #thegreatfabricdestash on Instagram. It’s a couple pieces of Joel Dewberry Heirloom and one piece of Kate Spain Terrain.

20140405-130415.jpg
Let’s see how this all fares at the end of April. I doubt I’ll have a finish but I should make plenty of piecing progress.

Triangle Takeover

The sewing bug has hit me again and I have been pressing and cutting fabric like crazy.
I am working on a self-designed quilt that uses stripped triangles. So the first part of this one was to cut the strips.
20140329-173800.jpg
The fabric is High Street from Moda. It is bright, saturated, and gorgeous! This was from a quilt kit that I received for Christmas. I didn’t like the quilt pattern that was included so I designed my own. The background fabric that was included is Kona Zen Grey and it also came with some orange for the binding.
Then I pieced 3 random strips together until I ran out of strips.
20140329-174500.jpg
I then cut those strips into triangles.

20140329-182309.jpg
I’m still working out the cutting measurements for the rest of the block. So, more to come….

I, once again, gave in to a Craftsy sale. I bought another Free Spirit Fat Quarter Box at a wonderful price. This one was a huge SCORE! Here come the photos:
20140329-175535.jpg So far so good. It’s such a pretty package already. I took it out and sorted it and it was even better than I expected.20140329-175651.jpg Wishing Well by Janean Morrison – it’s got to be close to the whole line.
20140329-175956.jpg A bunch of Lottie Da.

20140329-181600.jpg And some random prints.
I have no idea what I’m going to do with any of it.

Back to triangles……I also cut out an over abundance of triangles for the Triangle Quilt Along.

20140329-184523.jpg
So, over 350 triangles later, I am ready to start piecing some of this together.

Stash Build – December ’13

I received this box at my door this week:

There was definitely Goodness Inside –

Jasper thinks he’s the Goodness in the box!

What it really had inside was a beautiful selection of Free Spirit fabrics. Craftsy was having a huge sale early last week and I decided that I did deserve a wonderful early Christmas present even if I had to buy it myself.
Free Spirit assortment
They are just gorgeous. Task for 2014 – use these wonderful fabrics and create something fabulous!

I especially like this grouping of yellow and teal.
Free Spirit bundle
This group of reds/pinks/purples is also calling my name.
Free Spirit bundle
I now have plenty of fabric for next year’s crafting once we also take into consideration my most recent Robert Kaufman bundles and the Moda High Street grouping that I am getting for Christmas.
Moda High Streeet
This is not to say that I won’t add more in the next year, or even the next week, but I definitely have enough to get me started on something!

However, my first project of 2014 will be a charm pack quilt using Simply Style by V and Co. I’ve had that one sitting and waiting while I finished up all my Christmas projects and gifts.

Fabric Galore

There has not been much, okay any, progress made on the Halloween quilt for Mom. But, I have bunches of new fabric to show.
I bought some Charm Packs of Simply Style for a quilt top that I’m going to start soon. I don’t know when I’ll get to it but I can tell that I am about to start cutting.

20130916-081611.jpg
I have these scraps left from the Bloom, Bloom, Pow QAL at Freshly Pieced. I’m planning on incorporating them into the backing but I keep changing my mind on exactly how I want to do that.

20130916-082046.jpg
The fabric for my niece’s newest quilt just pops! And I love it:

20130916-082734.jpg
And, I have newly acquired Giggles by Me & my Sister designs for Moda. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it but I love it!

20130916-082906.jpg
I’ve completed my fabric pulls for the next blocks in the 2 Block of the Months that I am working on. The red/black/white combo is for the Sugar Block Club by Amy Gibson. And the purple/green/blue combo is for the Virtual Quilting Bee at Diary of a Quilter. They are both going to be really great in two completely different ways. I’ve already got some ideas on block placement for the VQB that, in my head, could be pretty cool looking.
