Welcome to my stop on the Stash Statement blog tour! I was honored when Kelly asked me if I wanted to participate and make a pattern from her new book. That pattern is College Prep and has an argyle design incorporated in it with improv in the background. I love improv piecing as I am not a big planner and like to just create as I go. That made this type of piecing was right up my alley.
Kelly gives great instructions about how to best make your improv slabs. However, we have a different idea about what makes a scrap piece. She laughs at me every time she sees my scrap bins and it cracks me up. My scraps tend to be pretty small as I lean toward foundation paper piecing and sometimes that requires a tiny piece of fabric. The smaller your scraps then the more scraps you’ll need to make your slab. The texture is amazing with the smaller scrap pieces and gives the piece a whole different look.
I ended up making two argyles which sized up to the perfect floor pillow size. This was a ‘takes a village’ project as I have been going through some medical treatments that cause fatigue and lack of focus. Luckily my guild mates are super helpful and offered to help me finish up this pillow. I had the two argyles done at the time and supplied the rest of the fabric for them to use to finish it up for me. My friend, Camille, lovingly sewed them together, quilted it, and created the envelope closure for the pillow. I love how it turned out and the colors of blue and yellow together. It’s always been one of my favorite combinations.
Be sure to head to Kelly’s blog and pick up a copy for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. There are so many great projects in this book and definitely a few I need to make once I get my energy level back. I also love all the little tips she gives about improv piecing. Like the one about errors in cutting. There are no errors in cutting – just sew it to another piece! Also, check out all the stops on this tour to see all the great interpretations of her patterns.
